- Dr. Dan Benishek’s viewpoint:
Dr. Dan Benishek believes that career politicians are adding to our nation’s problems, rather than providing solutions to America’s challenges. Dr. Benishek understands why incumbent Members of Congress and special interests oppose limits on congressional service, because they know term limits will force out careerists who are more concerned with their own personal gain than the public interest. Dr. Benishek will actively work to see term limits established for all members of Congress. As Northern Michigan’s representative, Dr. Benishek will seek a government that is truly “of the people, by the people, and for the people” — not a ruling class that cares more about themselves than their constituents. Dr. Benishek has taken a firm stand against a lifetime in public office by publicly announcing his support for limiting service in Congress to no more than three terms.
Dr. Benishek’s position on term limits is in agreement the vast majority of American voters. Nearly 80 percent of voters like the idea of imposing fixed limits in office for all members of Congress — including their own senators and representatives. A recent Fox News poll found that 78 percent of voters favor establishing term limits for Congress. That is nearly five times as many who oppose limiting the number of terms members can serve (16 percent). Large majorities of Republicans (84 percent), Democrats (74 percent), and independents (74 percent) favor the idea. [1]
- Quoting Dan Benishek:
“Career-consumed politicians in Washington got us in the mess we are in today voting for bills they haven’t read, for the deficits America can’t sustain and for the unrestrained increase in federal power. That’s why I am happy to tell voters I strongly favor term limits. Three terms and you’re retired seems about right to me.” [2]
